Nuclear small modular reactors market in Czechia

Czechia is a global leader in the nuclear power landscape, with a rich history and technological expertise. The country is committed to building nuclear small modular reactors (SMRs), along with new conventional reactors, to increase its energy security and decarbonize electricity generation.

ČEZ Group, a majority state owned utility company which operates Czechia’s existing nuclear power plants, formed a strategic partnership with Rolls-Royce SMR in 2024 to develop and deploy their technology. The first SMR should be built in the early 2030s on an existing nuclear site.

Poland’s Orlen Synthos Green Energy, which has partnered with GE Hitachi, is also considering Czechia as potential SMR construction location in the future.

Czech business landscape

Czechia is a medium-sized, open economy with a strong industrial base and thriving technology sector. Due to its geographic location at the centre of Europe, highly skilled workforce, and stable business environment, Czechia is a regional hub for many foreign companies. Czechs enjoy a relatively strong purchasing power with GDP per capita having increased to 91% of the EU average since the country joined the union in 2004. Czechia has not yet adopted the Euro as its currency. English is widely spoken in the business community, particularly in Prague and Brno.
