October 2008
The World Photonics Expo 2009 will be held from October 9 to November 5, 2009 in Gwangju, Korea. Themed around "Light, Opening the Future", the Expo will be the first of its kind in Korea. The event will include three segments: a Photonics Expo, a Light Festival, and a photonics related exhibition and convention. The World Photonics Expo 2009 will feature a themed video pavilion, as well as space, city and enterprise pavilions and a Landmark Building. The Light Festival will include a light materials performance and experience program. The World Photonics Expo 2009 will be hosted by Gwangju City and the Ministry of Knowledge Economy, and will be organised by the Gwangju International Photonics Expo Foundation.
Since 2000, Gwangju City has become Korea's premier photonics cluster, following the establishment of a photonics-related university, as well as research institutes and industrial facilities focusing on the development of semiconductor light sources and optical communications parts and components (LED, FTTH etc). The Gwangju photonics cluster is now home to more than 300 firms employing more than 5,000 people, and produced KRW 944 billion in sales in 2007. This growth is expected to continue over the next number of years.
