Trade Commissioner Service - Dominican Republic

Welcome to the office of the Trade Commissioner Service in Santo Domingo.

The mandate of the Commercial Section of the Canadian Embassy in Santo Domingo is to promote and protect Canada's economic interests in the Dominican Republic. In this context, we support the efforts of Canadian companies which have selected the Dominican Republic as a target market for their products, services, technologies and investments.

The Dominican Republic (DR) is Canada's third largest market in the Central America & Caribbean region, after Cuba and Trinidad & Tobago. Total Canadian exports to the DR reached C$213 million in 2008, with top products exported being iron structures, heavy petroleum oil preparations, potassium chloride, copper wire, smoked herring, wheat, and beans. Bilateral trade between the two nations reached C$343 million in 2008.

Canada is currently the fourth largest foreign investor in the Dominican Republic, after the United States, Spain and Mexico, with a cumulative investment of C$1,145 up to 2008. Main investment areas for Canadian companies are mining, financial services, textile manufacturing, and tourism.
