What is the CanExport - Community Investments (CECI) Program?
What is Foreign Direct Investment (FDI)?
For the purposes of the CECI program, FDI refers to international businesses establishing or expanding operations in Canada. (The CECI program does not fund initiatives related to mergers and acquisitions, investments from within other parts of Canada, trade and export.)
A foreign investor in this context is not someone who simply injects funds into local operations. Foreign direct investors tend to have a significant say in the management of local operations from an administrative standpoint, rather than simply voting through shares.
The purpose of the CECI program is to assist Canadian communities’ capacity to attract, retain and expand foreign direct investment by providing funding for approved FDI projects. Overall, the CECI program aims to increase Canadian employment and improve Canada’s capacity to compete in the global economy.
