From Alberta to Europe: Canadian innovation driving cleantech growth abroad

Founded in Calgary, Alberta, Eavor Technologies Inc. set out with a bold mission: to change the way the world generates energy. Drawing on expertise from Canada’s oil and gas sector, the company developed a breakthrough technology, Eavor-Loop™. This closed-loop system produces clean, always-on and scalable geothermal energy, offering a new solution for heating, cooling and electricity without emissions.

As a next-generation geothermal technology firm, Eavor has shown how Canadian innovation can address one of the greatest challenges of our time: building a reliable, affordable and sustainable energy future. With the strong support of the Trade Commissioner Service (TCS), the company is proving that future is within reach.

Breaking new ground in Europe

Europe’s ambitious climate goals and demand for reliable renewable energy made it a natural fit for Eavor’s innovation.

A major milestone was achieved in August 2023 when Eavor launched its geothermal project in Geretsried, Germany. The project’s German subsidiary, Eavor Erdwärme Geretsried GmbH, secured financing from the European Innovation Fund, demonstrating Europe’s confidence in Canadian clean technology. Production at the site is expected to begin in late 2025, marking the world’s first commercial implementation of an Eavor-Loop™ system.

With much of Eavor’s engineering expertise based in Calgary, the team frequently travels to its project site in Geretsried and its German office in Düsseldorf. Thanks to the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) mobility provisions, these short-term business visits are simpler and more efficient. This helps the company maintain strong ties between its Canadian headquarters and European operations.

Building momentum with support from TCS

The journey began in 2018, when our TCS Regional Office in Alberta and the Northwest Territories introduced the company to the CanExport funding program and began providing regular market intelligence, client connections and business leads.

In the Netherlands, our Trade Commissioners helped Eavor set up a local office and connected the company to government, provincial and industry contacts, while also linking Eavor to our Trade Commissioners in Germany, Italy, France and Turkey. In Italy, Trade Commissioners provided insights on geothermal projects, facilitated introductions to the national geothermal association, and helped Eavor gain visibility within the European Technology and Innovation Platform on Geothermal.

In Germany, our support began in 2018 with discussions about market opportunities and barriers, followed by detailed market intelligence, introductions to in-market qualified contacts and trade show support. By 2023, our TCS team was offering strategic guidance, facilitating introductions to utilities and research and development partners, and assisting the company with preparations for the inauguration of its geothermal project in Geretsried.

Alongside our support, several Canadian partners also played a vital role, including:

  • Canada Growth Fund
  • Natural Resources Canada’s Clean Growth Program
  • Emissions Reduction Alberta
  • Alberta Innovates

Together, these partners invested in the “Eavor-Lite” technology demonstration project, helping build the world’s first closed-loop geothermal system. These investments provided non-dilutive capital and helped de-risk the technology, attract European financing and accelerate international expansion.

Together, this support and the broader advantages of CETA gave Eavor the tools and connections needed to navigate Europe’s complex energy market, expand its network and grow internationally.

Proof of success

Eavor’s geothermal project in Geretsried is not only a technological breakthrough but also a symbol of how Canadian trade support can deliver tangible results abroad. By securing financing from the European Innovation Fund and establishing the first commercial-scale Eavor-Loop™ system in Germany, the company has shown that Canadian innovation can compete and succeed in Europe.

Looking ahead, Eavor will continue building on this momentum.  The company is sponsoring the World Geothermal Congress taking place in Calgary June 8 to 12, 2026, the first time the event will take place in North America. This milestone reinforces Canada’s growing role in the global clean energy sector.

A word from Eavor Technologies

“During my 40-year career in international business development I have represented companies from the UK, France, USA, Norway and Canada. Each country has a program for supporting international trade development. However, the Canadian Trade Commissioner Service is in a different league compared with every other country. The support they have provided since we founded the company in 2017 has been amazing and is one of the main reasons we have been so successful in building our business internationally. The support is always of a consistent high standard, proactive and innovative. One unique aspect of the TCS is that they not only respond to requests for assistance but are proactive in suggesting initiatives or inviting us to events that they feel we could benefit from. The gathering of all the European Trade Commissioners in Warsaw in December 2023 is particularly memorable, as was the Africa Energy Forum in Barcelona in 2024.”
