Japan’s agriculture and agri-food sector is shaped by its reliance on imported food products. As a major importer and a key market for Canadian exports, Japan offers opportunities across a range of agri-food and seafood products. Preferential access under the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) and growing demand for higher-value and consumer-oriented food products are supporting continued market opportunities.

Japanese business landscape
Japan is a net importer of agri-food and seafood products and an important market for Canadian exporters. The Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) provides preferential access for Canadian products, with tariffs reduced or eliminated on products such as meat, grains and processed foods.
Canada and Japan also have an organic equivalency arrangement covering plant products, livestock products and alcoholic beverages. This arrangement supports market access for certified organic products by making the criteria to sell products as organic equivalent in both countries. While bulk commodities make up most exports, retail and consumer-oriented processed food products, including organic and functional foods, are also present in the market.
Summary
Japan offers opportunities for export-ready Canadian agriculture and agri-food companies. Preferential market access for Canadians and strong demand for high-quality food products support continued growth in this market.
