As part of Canada's Indo-Pacific Strategy, the Advancing International Clean Technology Demonstrations (AICTD) initiative supports pilots and demonstrations of leading Canadian cleantech innovations with partners across Indo-Pacific markets. 

The AICTD Energy Storage and Smart Grid Mission to Japan will provide Canadian companies with a unique opportunity to explore demonstration projects, strategic partnerships, and commercialization opportunities in one of the world's most advanced energy markets.

Anchored to Smart Energy Week 2027, one of Asia's premier clean energy exhibitions, the mission will focus on energy storage systems (ESS), smart grid technologies, and related energy integration solutions.

The mission offers a unique platform to:

• participate in Smart Energy Week 2027, including the Smart Grid Expo, and engage with one of Asia's leading clean energy ecosystems
• benefit from business development activities such as:
  • market and policy briefings
  • company pitch sessions
  • networking events
  • site visits
  • customized business-to-business (B2B) meetings with Japanese utilities, project developers, EPC firms, technology integrators, industrial end-users, and potential demonstration hosts

Japan's commitment to expanding renewable energy generation while maintaining a reliable power system creates growing demand for solutions that enhance grid flexibility, improve operational efficiency, and support energy transition goals. Canadian companies with innovative, commercially viable technologies will find strong opportunities to engage with Japanese partners seeking practical solutions for real-world deployment.

Japan has made Green Transformation (GX) a national priority, advancing policies that support decarbonization, energy security, and economic growth. As the country accelerates renewable energy deployment and modernizes its electricity infrastructure, significant opportunities are emerging for innovative energy storage and smart grid technologies.

Japan's Strategic Energy Plan identifies strengthening electricity networks, improving grid flexibility, and enhancing renewable energy integration as key priorities. Utilities, project developers, technology integrators, and industrial energy users are actively seeking solutions that can increase reliability, optimize energy management, and reduce overall energy costs while supporting decarbonization objectives. 

Canadian SMEs selected for participation will be invited to apply for up to $5,000 reimbursement of 75% of travel and accommodations costs associated with the mission. This travel funding support is administered by NRC IRAP.
