Spain's energy system is divided into:
- The peninsular system, which covers the mainland and is interconnected with neighboring countries.
- Non-peninsular systems, which serve the Balearic and Canary Islands, as well as Ceuta and Melilla.
Spain strongly focuses on integrating renewable energy sources (particularly solar and wind power) into its grid. In 2024, renewable energy sources accounted for 56% of Spain's electricity mix.
Spain is investing in modernizing its grid through digitalization, smart grid technologies, and enhanced connectivity to ensure reliability and efficiency in energy distribution.
Red Eléctrica de España (REE), the operator of Spain's electricity transmission system, is actively involved in several initiatives to modernize the grid and enhance its resilience and efficiency. REE is undertaking projects to expand and reinforce the transmission network. This will help accommodate the growing share of renewable energy and ensure reliable electricity supply, including:
- the construction of new transmission lines
- upgrading existing infrastructure
- enhancing interconnections with neighboring countries
