Canada and India share almost 80 years of diplomatic relations and a commitment to a free, open and prosperous Indo-Pacific. The renewed bilateral partnership focuses on strengthening security and defence cooperation while advancing trade and investment under the roadmap announced by both countries' Foreign Ministers in October 2025.

India is one of the world's largest economies and an important partner for Canada's trade diversification efforts. India's rapid urbanization, expanding manufacturing base and growing digital economy continue to drive demand across a wide range of sectors. Growing trade and investment ties continue to create opportunities across a wide range of sectors.

India offers strong opportunities in sectors such as:

  • Digital industries and information and communications technology (ICT): Rapid digital transformation is driving demand for artificial intelligence, machine learning, cybersecurity, cloud computing, and digital infrastructure.

Relations and trade agreements

Canada and India continue to strengthen their bilateral trade and investment relationship. Both countries have committed to concluding negotiations on a Canada-India Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) in 2026.

A modern, commercially meaningful CEPA would improve market access and support Canada's goal of doubling bilateral trade to CA$70 billion by 2030. It is expected to create new opportunities across traditional industries and emerging sectors, including services, digital trade and telecommunications.

Canada does not currently have a free trade agreement with India.
